[The camera swoops around to the tune of Hex's eerie harp music, starting above Lost Angles, through Kits Sector, and finally diving down to the storage shack below the sphere of the Principle Office. Three binome guards are talking and eating doughnuts.]
Guard 1:
I've heard the Web is grown' outta control and invading other systems.
Guard 2:
Well, don't believe everything you hear.
Guard 3:
Uh... what's the Web?
Guard 2:
Would you get him!
Guard 1:
What's the Web?
[All three laugh. Then Guard 3 gapes and drops his doughnut. Hexadecimal appears mask first and menaces them. The guards scream.]

We are helping! We are helping![Cut to a park. Dot, in a jogging costume, is leading some other binome and digit joggers. All are panting.]
Dot:
C'mon! Just one more circuit. Eight:
Eight:
[pants] I... 8... exercise!

[Cut to Enzo, who is zip-boarding around Kits Sector. He shades his eyes and looks into the sky.]
Enzo:
Huh?

[Cut to the front of the diner. Bob is showing his new motorbike off to a female biker binome.
Bob:
This is great. A V3!
Biker:
Yeah. Should give you a lot less trouble than your 262.
Bob:
Hey, the 262's a classic! [hears a strange sound] What?
Let the sun shine, the sun shine in[They look up to the sky, where a paintbrush is crudely drawing a sun.]
Biker:
What is it, Bob?
Bob:
I dunno.
Biker:
Henh. I thought you Guardians knew everything.
[Bob glances down, annoyed.]

[Around Mainframe, various Mainframers, including the Binome Family, Toque, and Ms. Pac-Man are watching in fascination. Oo-Er, driving a car, squints and puts on a sunglass.]

Bob:
[talking into Glitch] Hey, Phong, what's goin' on? There's a-
Phong:
Bob, Hexadecimal has broken into the Archives! She has tampered with the system paint program [shows him the paint window in the Archive] and is currently running it from an alias in her Lair. She's also-
Guard 4:
Destroyed the entire Archive security system! You'd better get down here! It's really bad!
[The camera pulls back, showing that the Guard was talking to Dot Matrix via VidWindow. Dot clicks her icon, restoring her normal orange costume.]
Dot:
What about the guards?
Guard 4:
The guards appear to have been-

Munch - "The Scream"[Cut to a binome guard who is in a Munch-like painting]
Guard 1:
Kidnapped! Kidnapped by Hexadecimal! [Screams]
[Hexadecimal struts on the throne dais before the paintings, narrating.]
Hexadecimal:
Picture if you will an artist of great talent. Unappreciated by those around her, unnoticed by the critics. [she pouts]
[Guard 3, in a surreal painting, thinks via thought balloon: "SOB!"]
Hexadecimal:
[continuing] What would this artist have to do? What kind of masterpiece would she have to create to get recognition from those around her? [As she speaks, she opens a paint window and guides a fill bucket across the screen.]

[Cut to Baudway. Dripping pink paint streaks appear high up on the buildings.
Hexadecimal:
[VO] Ah hah!

[The Holomark delivery nome flies by the paint and watches, alarmed. The paint drips down to where a Little Lord Fauntleroy nome is eating a lollipop. He grins, amused.]

Hexadecimal:
Hmm. Oh! [She sings to herself as she gestures a paintbrush across the screen, drawing a wavy red line. In Mainframe, people flee from the building behind it as iridescent paint flows down in a thick layer. This paint moves like a blob, spreading as construction workers run away. They are overtaken.]

[Hex, enjoying herself, waves her hands about, changing masks as she does.]

[The buildings of Baudway take on pattern fills, and painted lines like plastic toy racecar tracks appear in the sky.]

Hexadecimal:
[To Guard #3] Well, what do you think?
[Guard #3 shakes his truncheon, and the swear symbols "@#%*&!!!" appear in his thought balloon.] Da Vinci - "Mona Lisa"
Hexadecimal:
[clicks her tongue disapprovingly] Such language! [She gestures, and the guard is flattened onto the canvas. She cackles wildly. Guard #1 begins screaming again. With a gesture she flattens him onto the canvas ala "The Scream." Then she speaks to Guard #2, who is in a Mona Lisa pose.] What are you smiling about?
Guard 2:
I-I like it!
Hexadecimal:
Why, thank you. [She gestures, flattening him as well. Then she goes to her paint window.] Ah, here's someone who'd appreciate my talents. [She gestures, coloring the Silicon Tor yellow, with the word "Hexadecimal" scrawled across the hook.]

  Sunflowers

[Cut to the Tor. The building shakes, then green cylinders force their way through the top and down onto the platform. Outside, the camera pulls back to reveal that The Tor has been turned into a vase for a gigantic bouquet of sunflowers. The camera zooms down inside as Megabyte throws off a piece of debris which had fallen on him.]
Megabyte:
[bellowing] Hexadecimal!
[Hack and Slash grunt and babble as they free themselves from the debris]
Hack:
Oh, boss!
[A VidWindow pings open in front of Megabyte]
Hexadecimal:
[sweetly] You called?
Megabyte:
You've destroyed my Tor! I WILL get you for this.
Hexadecimal:
Oh, but your sector was looking so dreary. I've simply cheered it up a little bit! There's no need to make such a long face about it!
[She seizes the VidWindow image of Megabyte's face by the sides and pulls outward, stretching his head bizarrely, then releasing it again.]
Megabyte:
Hexad- Clowning Around Megabyte - the new action figure!
[Hexadecimal gestures again, scrawling a smile across Megabyte's face. He makes muffled noises. She paints him up in red and yellow, putting a harlequin hat and a grass skirt on him.]
Hack:
Holy
Slash:
Moley!
[Hexadecimal freezes and outlines Megabyte, them cuts & pastes his image into the "sky" above Mainframe, startling two binomes.]
Hexadecimal:
Now... who's next?

[Wipe to Dot's Diner. Enzo flies down to Bob, who is still with his new bike and the biker nome.]
Enzo:
Bob! This is random! Mainframe's gone totally haywire! You should see the Tor!
Bob:
Just a nano, Enzo. I've got Phong online.
Phong:
[panicky] Bob, it's worse than I thought! The damage caused by Hexadecimal's painting will become permanent when the scheduled system backup occurs!
Bob:
Can't you break the link in the Archives to stop her?
Phong:
Yes, but first you have to perform an undo command to return things to normal!
Bob:
Great. That means I've gotta go to the Lair!
Phong:
Precisely, Bob. Once you have undone the paint, I will break the link. But be careful, and remember- Granny Smith, not Macintosh
[Phong's image freezes. Then a pink "erase-a-lot" eraser scrubs out his head.]
Bob:
Phong? Phong! Remember what?!
[Phong's head is replaced with an apple. A sign "APPLES 50p per lb" appears in the corner. Phong's voice is muffled as he struggles against the "graft". Pan from the VidWindow to Hex, who is watching him from her throne. She laughs.]
Hexadecimal:
My dear Phong, now you really are the keeper of the Core! [Laughs maniacally]

[PLACE COMMERCIAL HERE]

[Phong is placed beside Megabyte in the sky above the Sunflower Tor. Cut to Bob and Enzo, who are watching the sky as the buildings behind them slowly slump as if melting.]
Enzo:
Phong's out of the picture. Sort of. Who's gonna break the link now?
Bob:
We've gotta reach your sister, Enzo. She's our only hope. Biodegradable Glitch
[Bob tries to activate Glitch. The keytool melts right off his arm.]
Bob:
Glitch!
Enzo:
Quick, try a WidWindow!
[Bob opens a VidWindow to Dot.]
Bob:
Dot! Dot, can ya hear me!
[As he shouts, black, drippy paint streaks appear on the window, obscuring Dot.]
Enzo:
Dot!
Bob:
Well, Enzo, looks like we've got a communications blackout.
[Enzo holds up a zip board which is melting like warm wax.]
Enzo:
Our zip boards aren't doing so well either, Bob.
Bob:
Oh no. My brand new bike!
[Bob's bike slumps into a puddle.]
Enzo:
You sure have bad luck with transport.

[Dot holds up her organizer. Black paint flows off the screen. She drops it.]
Dot:
Ugh! Guess I'm on my own for this one.
[Dot runs off across a ground which looks like a closeup of an Impressionist painting.]

Dialectical duelisms!

[Bob and Enzo walk through a Dali-esque landscale, complete with an aerocephalic skull, segmented trees, and limp watches]
Bob:
She eliminated Phong and Megabyte first, then she took out communications and transport. It's almost like she's workin' to some sort of plan.
Enzo:
Hexadecimal? A plan? Dude!
Bob:
Enzo, this is important. It's all up to you. You've got to get to Dot and tell her to break the link to Hex's lair.
[Frisket runs by, chasing a flying fish. Enzo catches Frisket.]
Enzo:
No problem, Bob. Frisket'll help me. Come on, boy!
Bob:
Wait, Enzo. Don't do anything until you get my signal.
Enzo:
What's your signal?
Bob:
I don't know yet. But you'll recognize it when you see it.
Enzo:
Okay, Bob, you can count on me. And, Bob - be careful.
Bob:
Don't worry, Enzo. I'm sure my good looks and charm will get me through.
[Bob laughs weakly. Enzo and Frisket walk by, shaking their heads.]
Bob:
All right, Hexadecimal, prepare to meet your worst critic!

  Keith Maring

[On one of the islands of Floating Point Park, Mike the TV is filming himself talking about Hexadecimal's works.]
Mike:
[smarmily] Formal or informal, the plasticity of the work denotes the abstract figurative tension, and - ah! [showing a cube painted with Keith Maring-esque figures of two humans, blue and green, and a red dog.] Now this next one is an important work not so much for how it looks, but how it feels. [The camera pans to a "The Thinker" sculpture, which looks at the camera and then goes back into pose.] The-the-the torment, the-the-the pain of the artist is in evidence in the juxtaposition of the smooth and the rough textures. [showing a set of Dot Matrix pictures much like Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe silkscreen] This is an excellent example of her brushwork. [drawing the camera to a set of buildings painted in the style of Piet Mondrian] And, uh, and here, here, we have evidence of her draftsmanship skills. Heh heh. Piet Mondrian
Makeup binome:
And what's that?
Mike:
[flatly] That, Madame, is a Guardian.
[Bob takes the camera]
Mike:
Hey! Do you mind? We are trying to make a documentary! "Hexadecimal: The Madness and The Glory!" Oh, I love it.
Bob:
Oh, sorry. Cut! Print that! All right, folks, it's a wrap!
[The binome crew scatters like scared nulls.]
Bob:
[grabbing Mike by the antenna] Come on, Mike. I've got a plan. And you're in it.
[They walk away. The Thinker looks at the camera and shrugs.]

Sky of blue and sea of green

[Enzo and Frisket walk down a streetway that looks as if it might have been lifted out of "Yellow Submarine". Frisket is sniffing the ground, leading them. They walk into an eye. A traffic VidWindow saying "Wrong Way" darts into frame. Then they are walking on a thin line connecting a polka-dotted building to a plaid one.]
Enzo:
This is too weird, Frisket! Are you sure you know where we're going?
[Frisket, still sniffing, leads them though a landscape of blotchy, splashy paint.]
Enzo:
Random!
[Frisket stops in a relatively unaffected area and points.]
Enzo:
What is it, Frisket?
[Dot, screaming, slides by on one of the paint "tracks" doodled all over the area.]
Dot:
Enzo!
Enzo:
There's Dot! Frisket? Not MOC
[Enzo picks up Frisket, who by a trick of camerawork and literal-minded perspective has been reduced to the size of an action figure. Enzo sets the dog in the palm of his hand. Frisket yaps.]
Enzo:
What happened? Oh, Frisket!
[Enzo tosses Frisket onto the bill of his cap.]
Enzo:
Well, sis, here I come!
[Enzo gets on the same track that he saw Dot on, and starts slidin'.]
Enzo:
WHOA!

  The Programming of Adam

[Camera on the Principle Office, which is now recorated with a detail of Michaelangelo's "The Creation of Adam". A number of paint tracks lead to the area below. On one Dot is still sliding and screaming. The track finally deposits her at the Archive shack. The security doors are jaggedly open, clearly wrecked.]
Dot:
Oh, no! She's completely destroyed the security system! Not even Megabyte coulda done this.

[Enzo, whooping, is sliding down the track. He ends up where Dot did.]
Dot:
Enzo! Are you okay? What happened to Frisket?
Enzo:
It's a long story. [He spins the brim of his cap. Frisket barks.] Dot, I've got an important message from Bob! [He notices what Hexadecimal has done to the Archive shack, and walks in, alarmed.] This is bad! Really bad!

[The Lair. Hexadecimal sings to herself as she doodles in a paint window.] Look at the painting in the background
[Bob and Mike are now in Lost Angles. They walk through the Arc de Triomphe, which has been decorated with Picasso images. They pass between two clumps of giant nulls, each of which has a cubistically distorted Bob mask.]
Bob:
Ugh. Creepy!
Mike:
The artist appears to be fixated with this Guardian image.
Bob:
Whaddaya mean by that?
Mike:
[turning blue] It's her blue period! [laughing] Get it? [His laughter trails off weakly.]
[They walk a little further. When the camera is behind them Mike stops.]
Mike:
I wish you'd stop doing that.
Bob:
What? I will call them "Many-Me."
[Bob turns back. Life-sized images of him, like cardboard cutouts or giant cels, pop up out of the ground. Bob yelps.]
Mike:
[German accent] Zis is obviously an example of the Guardian's multiple personalities.
[Bob steps forward. Another image appears.]
Bob:
Wait a minute... [He holds the camera up. An image of him with the camera pops up.] Cool.
[Bob nudges the second to most recent image with the camera. They all fall like a line of dominoes. Some have Glitches, others do not. Oops.]
Bob:
Come on, Mike. We're ready.

[Inside the Archive shack, all is chaos, with VidWindows blowing around frantically. Some are arranged in a whirling Helix, with VidWindows as the "steps" and black-and-red images of Hex's masks on the sides. Dot and Enzo are in the entrance, which is framed by the mouth of a giant Hexadecimal Screaming mask.]
Dot:
Right, Enzo. We've gotta find the system paint program quickly and break that link.
Enzo:
Oh, yeah, I forgot! [reciting] We're not supposed to break the link until we get Bob's signal.
Dot:
What's his signal?
Enzo:
[reciting] He doesn't know yet, but we'll recognize it when we see it.
Dot:
Aw, great.
Enzo:
C'mon, Dot! This way!
Dot:
Enzo, wait! It's dangerous! What a pane.
Enzo:
No way, sis. Just use 'em like steps.
[Enzo jumps up one step, loses his balance, and falls, yelling. On his way down he hits various VidWindows, which take the images of the part that touched them. Finally he disappears completely into one.]
Dot:
Enzo!
[Enzo is now trapped inside a dozen VidWindows. Dramatic music.]


[PLACE COMMERCIAL HERE]

[Bob and Mike on the section of Lost Angles nearest Hex's Lair. This part has been doodled all over graffiti style. They spot Skuzzy.]
Bob:
Skuzzy?
Mike:
Guarding Hexadecimal's Lair? Wotsit to ya?
[Both laugh. Their laughter fades as Skuzzy approaches them - revealing his true size, which is now quite large. Skuzzy's purr deepens into a threatening growl.]
Mike:
[as Peter Lorre] Master! You know what this means, don't you?
Bob:
Yeah. Hex can enlarge as well!
[Skuzzy roars like a Spidermind, revealing lots and lots of long, needle-like teeth. Bob and Mike just stand there, looking scared.]

[Hexadecimal is still at a paint window. She looks to the side and notices the VidWindow showing the exterior of her island.]
Hexadecimal:
Oh? What's this?

[Bob and Mike are running for their lives]
Bob:
This is ridiculous! It's only a painting!
Mike:
Well, it's a little too realistic for me!

[In the Archive area, Dot leaps from the helix to the VidWindow with Enzo's face.]
Dot:
I told you it was dangerous.
Enzo:
Ahh, I bet stuff like this doesn't happen to Bob.

[Bob and Mike are fleeing, screaming, from Skuzzy. Skuzzy roars and gnashes his teeth.]
Bob:
Split up!
[A duplicate of Skuzzy appears and reverses itself. Each Skuzzy takes off after one of Our Heroes.]
Bob:
Not you!
Mike:
[militarily] Main system fully functional, sir!
[Mike leaps ahead of Skuzzy's gnashing jaws.]

[Back in the Archive]
Dot:
How're we going to find it in all this chaos?
Enzo:
Hang on a sec.. I think I can... unh... [He presses with his hands on the sides of his VidWindow. After a few tries other windows open on the side for his arms and hands, extending his reach.] ...control the windows!
Dot:
All right, Enzo! Let's go!
[Enzo's arm windows rise to form a stairway. Dot runs up.]

[Lost Angles. The Skuzzies are still roaring, and Bob and Mike are still running. Their paths intersect. Bob trips over Mike, and both land in a heap. Then Hexadecimal appears, mask first. The Skuzzies skid to a stop.]

Hexadecimal:
Now now now, Skuzzy. You know the Guardian is mine.
[She gestures. The Skuzzies, turn and flee, en route merging back into one. Skuzzy darts into a mousehole-like crack in a building.]
Hexadecimal:
Why, hello, Bob! Have you come to try and spoil my fun?
Bob:
No! Actually, we're here to interview you.
Mike:
We are?
[Bob swats the back of Mike's set.]
Mike:
Y-yes, yes we are. Huh.
Bob:
We're here on behalf of Mainframe's local arts program. They're very excited to have such a famous artist living right here in Mainframe. They want us to do a profile on you.
Hexadecimal:
Profile on moi? Ooh, recognition - at last. Well, you'd better come in then, and I'll just go and put on my face.
[Hex uploads into her mask, which flies out.]
Bob:
I hope this works.
[Hexadecimal cuts & pastes Bob and Mike into her Lair.]

  Looking

[Archive. A VidWindow containing Enzo's eye opens and looks around.]
Dot:
Can ya see anything up there?
[Another window with his mouth opens.]
Enzo:
Nope. It's not up here.
Dot:
There it is!
[Dot points to a single window way off in the distance. A VidWindow with Enzo's face appears. Frisket, on Enzo's cap, is in a separate window.]
Enzo:
I hope Bob's doing better than us.
[Enzo extends an arm-stairway toward the paint window. Dot starts walking up.]
Dot:
Don't worry, Enzo. Bob wouldn't'a gone to meet Hexadecimal without a really good plan.

[In the Lair]
Mike:
That's your whole plan?!
Bob:
Yyyep.
Mike:
And neither of us are expected to survive?!
Bob:
That's right.
Mike:
[putting on a Western hat and speaking with a John Wayne accent] Well, that's not much of a plan, is it, pilgrim?
Bob:
Just do it, Mike!
[They hear Hexadecimal appear.]
Bob:
You're on.
[Mike gulps and backflips onto the stool in the set. A backdrop is set up, and a number of Hex's paintings are displayed on easels.] Foreshadowing
Mike:
[hushed voice] Tonight on the program we have the reclusive artist Hexadecimal, a painter known for her startling originality as much as for the huge impact of her work. [Camera closes in briefly on a small replica of "Voices of Fire".] Hexadecimal has never been interviewed before. [Camera view from above. Bob is filming. Behind the backdrop is the paint program window.] We bring you this system-wide exclusive straight from the artist's studio.
Hexadecimal:
Lair!
Mike:
What?
Hexadecimal:
The artist's LAIR.
Mike:
Oh. Heh. Right, heh. Lair.
Bob:
[stage whisper] That's good, Mike! Keep going!
Mike:
Now, Hexadecimal, many people have asked what is your inspiration t-
Hexadecimal: Profile on Hex
[interrupting] My inspiration, yes. Well, of course the inspiration for all of my works is myself. I'm very fond of self-portraits. I'd say they're my best pieces. [posing] I'm ready for my closeup now, Mr. Guardian.
[Bob does not react. Suspicious, she gestures. The image of Bob holding the camera falls over. Hexadecimal, realizing she has been tricked, screams in rage. Mike leaps from his chair.]
Mike:
Next week on the program, Al from Al's Diner! Slow food: art form or indigestion?
Hexadecimal:
WHAT?!
[As Hex shrieks and throws paintings around, Bob is at the paint program window behind the set. He calls up various subwindows, the last of which says "UNDO ALL?" He points at it, confirming the undo command.]

All Web breaking loose

[In the Archive, the VidWindows shake as if in an earthquake. Dot yells and struggles to keep her balance.]
Dot:
I suppose this is Bob's signal! Enzo! You've gotta get me to that window!
Enzo:
Okay, Dot! Here goes!
[Enzo extends the staircase. Dot runs.]

[All around Mainframe, the paint is shattering and disappearing, freeing buildings and Mainframers. The sunflowers in the Tor explode. Phong and Megabyte are no longer in the sky, with or without diamonds. The Michaelangelo image shatters off the Principle Office.]

Ripping, ripping, ripping, ripping me apart!

[In the Lair, Hex appears behind Bob, clearly intending to do him grievous harm.]
Bob:
Oh no!
[On the paint program window, Bob quickly outlines Hex's mask and drags it onto a blank window. Behind him, Hex screams as energy pours out of the hole that her mask had been covering. She tries to cover it with her hands. She falls to her knees. Bob watches in horror.]

[Archive. Dot is still running up the steps. Windows with Enzo's face, his hat, and a hand pointing backward appear.]
Enzo:
Dot!
[The "steps" behind Dot are disappearing one by one in small explosions.]
Dot:
Uh oh!

[In the VidWindow, The mask that Bob had taken off Hexadecimal is multiplying into its many aspects. Hexadecimal proper is still screaming, trying to hold her energy in. All around them, paintings and bits of set are spinning about as if caught in a whirlwind.] Help us!
Masks:
[echoing] Guardian. Guardian! You have removed the only thing that keeps her power in check! Without the masks Hexadecimal will overload and be destroyed! Damn you fool! You silly...

[The giant mask explodes from around the entrance to the Archive. VidWindows are flying around like crazed gnats. Dot is nearing the paint program window. The "steps" are disappearing close behind her.]
Enzo:
Dot, hurry! Everything's going back to normal!
Dot:
[panting] I'm nearly there, Enzo! Good jogging practice
[Behind Dot, the Archive is returning to its former order. Enzo runs out of windows for Dot to run on. She leaps for the paint window - and misses. She yells. Enzo pops out of his window and hangs from the edge.]
Enzo:
Dot!
[Dot yells. Before she can fall to her doom, Frisket catches her in his jaws.]
Enzo:
All right, Frisket!
[Frisket bears her up to the window and hangs on with his forepaws. She taps the link and then breaks it with a fist.]
Enzo:
We did it!

[The Lair. Hex is shrieking her head off.]
Bob:
I've gotta reverse this program!
Masks:
[echoing] Yes. Do it, Guardian. Yes. Save us. Do it, Guardian. Save us.
[The paint program VidWindow closes.]
Bob:
Oh, no, Dot! Not now!
Masks:
[echoing] Please, help us!
Bob:
Glitch! Return!
[Glitch, now unmelted, bleeps and zooms to Lost Angles and attaches to Bob's bracer]
Bob:
Glitch! Close file!
[Glitch's "wheel" attaches to the mask window and creates a box with Hex's neutral mask. All the other masks slide into it.]
Masks:
[echoing] Thank you.
Bob:
Glitch! Cut and paste! Crawling in and closing the door behind herself
[The mask zooms from the window and slams into place on Hexadecimal. The whirlwind abruptly stops. Hex falls onto the ground in a fetal position and begins shivering. Skuzzy approaches her, and she cowers away, her arms covering her face. Bob, Mike, Skuzzy, and the guards look on helplessly as she trembles.]

[Bob flies away from Lost Angles. He speaks into Glitch.]
Bob:
Dot, are you guys okay?
Dot:
We're fine, Bob. What about you?
Bob:
Everything's back to normal around here. Well, as normal as Lost Angles ever gets.
Enzo:
Bob, what happened Hexadecimal?
Bob:
She's in a pretty bad way. Enzo. It'll be a while before she even thinks about painting again. But she's getting help - the best help I could get for her.

  Nobody home

[In the Lair. Hexadecimal is slumped lifelessly on her throne. Mike the TV is in front of her. As he speaks, various appropriate images appear on his screen.]
Mike:
It's the Love Hospital!
[Hex does not react.]
Mike:
And you could receive this wonderful product for only ninety-nine ninety-nine ninety-nine!
[Again, no reaction from Hex. The only sign of life is the glow in her eyes. Mike frowns. Then he gets an idea. He jerks his arm up and down and makes shrieking noises.]
Mike:
[as Norman Bates] No! No, mother, what have you done? It's coming this way! It's horrible!
